AN EARLY 12-BORE PINFIRE BAR-IN-WOOD HAMMER SHOTGUN, serial no. 3554, PATENT USE NO. 136,
circa 1865, with re-browned single-bite 28in. damascus barrels, the top-rib with traces of signature and serial number, action flat marked 'POWELL'S PATENT 136', shallow fences with plain pin platforms, scroll engraved lift-up top-lever marked 'POWELL'S PATENT', borderline and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'WILLIAM POWELL & SON', scroll engraved hammers, walnut butt-stock chequered at the wrist and fitted with an iron heel-plate, iron tang and trigger guard bow with finial, chequered splinter fore-end held by a single cross key and with concealed joint, moulded finial to fore-end tip, together with a period photograph of the original owner holding the gun

Provenance: The rear of the photograph is hand written:
"THOMAS MARSON 1874 (1832-1916) holding Powell shotgun No. 3554 pinfire made 4-10-1865"

We have been kindly informed that the gun was sold for £26 / 10 (including £1/10 for the safety) as a 'best' gun to a Robert Parnall on the 4th October 1865. It was built with 28in. barrels.
